It is already providing indigenous communities with economic independence.
And as vital as this is, it can and must do even more.
I hope and believe indigenous tourism will contribute to the journey of
meaningful reconciliation as a people and as a nation.
Whilst everyday Australians have limited opportunity to develop an appreciation
of indigenous culture and history there is plenty of goodwill to work
with.
I cannot help but feel a burning, passionate belief that Australian people
carry in their hearts a deep-seated, undeniable thirst for meaningful
reconciliation. And we all want to move on.
After all, tourism invites us to see the world through another persons
eyes. In particular indigenous tourism offers us the opportunity to meet
on terms where we can share the life experiences of people like Jimmy
Crombie.
What Jimmy understood was that tourism breaks down stereotypes and builds
relationships. It provides a window into other cultures and tourism expands
our horizons.
As he said, "They can hear my story."
